Breckenridge does the holidays better than almost any mountain town in Colorado, and it is not close. The town wraps 11 miles of historic Main Street in a quarter million lights, hundreds of people in Santa suits race down that same street in early December, Vikings take over mid month, and the ski resort closes out the year with a torchlight parade down Peak 9 followed by fireworks. If you are planning a Christmas or New Year's trip for the 2026/2027 season, here is everything happening in town and on the mountain, plus what to do with the days in between.
When does Breckenridge open for the 2026/2027 ski season?
Breckenridge Ski Resort is scheduled to open on November 6, 2026, which puts the mountain in full operation well ahead of Thanksgiving and with roughly six weeks of terrain opening up before Christmas week. Neighboring Keystone is targeting an October opening, so an early season trip can easily cover both.
This is also the first winter of The Kingdom of Breck, a campaign the resort launched in August 2026 that reclaims a title the community coined for itself in 1936. A local women's group found an 1880 map that left Breckenridge off entirely, and rather than ask anyone to fix it, they declared the town's independence. It got called No Man's Land, then the Kingdom of Breckenridge. Expect the theme to run through resort programming all season, with additional experiences announced closer to opening.
The top ranked Rockstar Energy Open snowboard competition also returns to Breckenridge this winter. Dates have not been released yet.

The Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas, December 5, 2026
The first Saturday of December is when Breckenridge flips the switch on its holiday season, and it is a full day of programming rather than a single ceremony.
Things start with the Holiday Dog Parade, where costumed dogs and their owners lead a procession from The Canteen Taphouse on North Main and head south through the historic district. The Race of the Santas follows, with hundreds of runners in full Santa regalia starting on Main Street in front of The Canteen and finishing in Blue River Plaza. There is a Children's Moose March for younger participants, and the first 150 youth registrants receive a moose beanie. The first 700 registrants overall get commemorative socks.
Registration details worth knowing: Santa suits and Santa hats can be added to your race registration, or bring your own. Bib pickup and same day registration run in the afternoon at The Canteen Taphouse at 208 North Main Street. A portion of proceeds benefits Carriage House Early Learning Center, the oldest childcare facility in Breckenridge. Register through Breckenridge Recreation.
The runners finish just in time for the Lighting of Breckenridge at 5 p.m., when the town switches on more than 59,000 feet of LED lights, about 11.22 miles of them, totaling roughly 250,000 bulbs. String them end to end and they would cover the entire 4 O'Clock Run from peak to base more than three times. The lights stay up all winter, so even if you miss the ceremony you get the effect through March.
Ullr Fest, December 17 to 19, 2026
The 63rd annual celebration of Ullr, the Norse god of snow, is the most Breckenridge thing that happens all year. The town has been throwing this party since 1963 to encourage a powder filled season, and it has never once been tasteful about it.
- The Ullr Parade takes over Main Street at 4 p.m. with cash prizes for the most creative floats. Float registration closes ahead of the event or when the parade fills, and there are no walkups.
- The Ullr Bonfire runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the East Sawmill parking lot, where the town burns leftover Christmas trees from prior years and performs its best collective snow dance.
- The World's Longest Shotski unofficial world record attempt, with all proceeds benefiting Breckenridge Mountain Rotary. Participants must be 21. It sells out, so register early.
- The Ullr Ice Plunge into a hole cut in frozen Maggie Pond, for the genuinely committed.
- The crowning of the Ullr King and Queen, awarded for contributions to the community.
- Curling, ice skating parties, bar specials and games across town all week.

Christmas week in Breckenridge
Christmas week is the single busiest stretch of the Breckenridge calendar. Here is how locals handle it.
Holiday performances
The Breckenridge Backstage Theatre and the Alpine Dance Academy both typically stage holiday productions in December, including annual ballets and seasonal shows. Programs are announced in the fall, and seats for Christmas week go fast.
Holiday dining, and how not to blow it
Breckenridge has more than 100 bars and restaurants, and most stay open through the holidays, though many do not run special holiday menus. A few things that will save your evening:
- Make reservations well in advance. Weeks, not days.
- For walk in spots, go early and expect to wait. Viewing the lights with a cocoa is a productive way to burn 45 minutes.
- Arrive with your whole party. Most restaurants in town will not seat incomplete groups.
- Look beyond Main Street. The lesser known bars and lounges off the main drag have shorter waits and better odds.
- Use to go and curbside options if the wait math does not work. Plan those ahead too.
Holiday shopping
More than 200 independently owned shops, boutiques and tasting rooms fill the historic district, and a lot of it is made locally. Shopping Main Street after dark once the lights are on is the closest thing Breckenridge has to a free holiday attraction.
Christmas services
Several churches in town hold Christmas and Christmas Eve services, including Father Dyer United Methodist, St. Mary's Catholic, St. John the Baptist Episcopal, Christ Lutheran and Breckenridge Christian Ministries. Call ahead, as holiday schedules and capacity vary.
New Year's Eve in Breckenridge
This is the town's signature night, and it runs in three acts.
Glow Worm Parade, around 6 p.m.
Kids who can ski or ride a green run independently are invited to lead things off. Registration and lineup start around 5 p.m. at the Beaver Run Ski School, where participants pick up glow sticks. For a lot of families this ends up being the highlight of the entire trip.
Torchlight Parade, 6 p.m.
Instructors from the Breckenridge Ski and Snowboard School descend more than 1,000 vertical feet of Peak 9 carrying bright red torches, carving a glowing Christmas tree shape of light down the mountain that is visible from town. Best viewing is from Beaver Run Resort or The Maggie at the base of Peak 9.
Fireworks, around 9:30 p.m.
The show launches from the base of Peak 9 and runs about 15 minutes. Good viewing spots include Blue River Plaza, the North Gondola parking lot, Main Street Station, anywhere on Ridge Street, the base areas of Peaks 7 through 9, and the overlooks at Boreas Pass or Baldy Road. Because the fireworks go off well before midnight, you can catch the whole thing with young kids and still make bedtime.
Restaurants and bars across town run special New Year's Eve menus and countdown parties. Reserve those the moment they open.
Things to do in Breckenridge over the holidays if you do not ski
Not everyone in the group wants six days on the hill. Breckenridge holds up better than most ski towns on the off days.
- Free sledding at Carter Park. The hill at the end of South High Street has a sled shed where you can borrow and return sleds at no cost. The town would rather you use those than buy new ones.
- Cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Two Nordic centers maintain more than 30 miles of groomed trail between them, plus hundreds of miles of ungroomed trail through old mining terrain if you would rather go on your own.
- Sleigh rides. Options run from group hot cocoa rides with entertainment to dinner and sleigh combinations to private one horse open sleigh rides.
- Nordic snowcat tours. The Breck Nordic Center runs a heated eight passenger glass cabin snowcat through the historic Legend forests, with a s'mores and hot chocolate stop at a backcountry hut.
- Dog sledding. Siberian husky teams pull you through spruce forest in the backcountry outside town, and it is some of the best dog sledding in Colorado.
- Ice skating, tubing and the town rec center fill in the rest, and all of it is a short walk or shuttle ride from the historic district.
Staying past the holidays? Two more reasons to extend
The Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships run January 23 to February 2, 2027, the 36th year of the event. Teams from around the world hand carve 12 foot tall, 25 ton blocks of snow using only hand tools, no power tools allowed. Sculpting week is January 23 to 27, and the finished gallery is on free public display through February 2, lit up at night in downtown Breckenridge.
Keystone, about 25 minutes away, runs its own New Year's Eve torchlight and fireworks show at 7 p.m., which means an ambitious group could realistically catch Keystone's fireworks and be back in Breckenridge for the 9:30 p.m. show. Keystone's free daily Kidtopia programming also runs all season.
Where to stay in Breckenridge for the holidays
Nearly every holiday event happens either on Main Street or at the base of Peak 9, so where you book determines whether your week involves parking hunts or a five minute walk.
- Downtown and Main Street: best for the Lighting of Breckenridge, Ullr Fest, the snow sculptures, shopping and dining. You walk to everything and never move the car.
- Peak 9 base area: best for the Torchlight Parade, the Glow Worm Parade and the New Year's Eve fireworks, plus first chair access.
- Peak 7 and Peak 8: quieter, with gondola access into town and strong ski-in/ski-out inventory.

Is Breckenridge crowded at Christmas?
Yes. Christmas week through New Year's is the busiest period of the entire year, on the mountain and in town. Lift lines, restaurant waits and parking all peak. Early December before the holiday rush and the second week of January are noticeably calmer with the same lights still up.
How far in advance should I book a Breckenridge holiday rental?
Six to nine months out for Christmas week and New Year's. Ullr Fest weekend and snow sculpture viewing week in late January also book heavily. If you are reading this in the fall for the current season, call us, because cancellations do happen and we know our inventory.
What is there to do in Breckenridge on Christmas Day?
The ski resort operates, the holiday lights are on, Carter Park sledding is free and open, and many restaurants stay open, though you should have reserved. Several churches hold Christmas and Christmas Eve services. Sleigh rides and dog sledding typically run on holiday schedules, so confirm directly with the operator.
Are Breckenridge holiday events free?
Most of the big ones are. How far is Breckenridge from Denver?
About 80 miles west on I-70, roughly 100 minutes without traffic. Holiday weekends add significant time in both directions, so check CDOT conditions before you drive Loveland Pass or the Eisenhower Tunnel.
