When does Keystone open for the 2026/2027 ski season?
Keystone is targeting an opening as soon as possible in October 2026 and is aiming to be the first resort in North America to open for the second year in a row. Nearby Summit County resorts follow close behind, which means you can build a trip around more than one mountain in early season:

This is where Keystone separates itself from every other Summit County mountain. A long list of activities runs every single day of the season and costs nothing, whether you are booked in a slopeside condo or driving up for the day.
The World's Largest Snow Fort
Built fresh each winter at the top of the River Run Gondola on Dercum Mountain, the snow fort has tunnels, walls, a hidden trail through the trees and an ice throne. It sits next to Adventure Point, so you can pair it with a tubing run in the same trip up the gondola. You need a lift ticket, season pass or scenic pass to ride up.
Meet the avalanche rescue dogs
Keystone's four legged ski patrol heroes hold regular meet and greets at Kidtopia Headquarters through the season. Handlers walk families through how the dogs are trained, what an avalanche search actually looks like, and how to stay safe in the mountains. It remains one of the most popular recurring events on the mountain, and for good reason.
Ripperoo's Village Parade and Saturday fireworks
Keystone's mascot leads a parade through River Run Village on a set schedule all winter, usually wrapping up with cookies and a fireworks display over the village. Saturday evening fireworks are a fixture of the Keystone ski season and one of the easiest ways to end a ski day without spending a dollar.
Snow science and wildlife education
Keystone's science school instructors run family friendly sessions on the anatomy of a snowflake, how the snow cycle works and the basics of avalanche safety. Friends of the Dillon Ranger District also hosts wildlife education sessions covering the animals that live in the Summit County high country. Both are great options for a mid week rest day or for anyone in your group who is not skiing.
Nordic and snowshoe first timer sessions
Keystone is not a downhill only destination. First timer cross country and snowshoe sessions are designed for people who have never clipped into nordic gear, and the Keystone Nordic Center has miles of groomed track and skate lanes. It is a low cost way to get outside on a day when the alpine terrain is scoured or the lines are long.

Three multi day festivals anchor the Kidtopia calendar. Exact 2026/2027 dates are released by the resort in the fall, but the pattern holds every year.
Kidtopia Spectacular, December
The holiday kickoff. A free bounce party inside Keystone Lodge and Spa, fireworks over Lakeside Village, a parade through River Run Village with Santa and Ripperoo, and the grand lighting ceremony of the snow fort at the top of the gondola. Free snow tubing, hot chocolate, cookie decorating, photos with Santa and ski patrol dog meet and greets round out the week.
Kidtopia Culinary Festival, February
Cooking demonstrations built for young foodies, bakery tours, chocolate fountains, dessert specials, apron decorating and a celebrity chef event. Kids leave with recipes to try at home, which is a nice souvenir compared to another keychain.
Kidtopia Music Experience, March
The spring kickoff. Live outdoor performances from family friendly acts, the Snow Pants Dance Party and a week of music themed programming as the season turns toward slush and sunshine.
Holiday events at Keystone
Thanksgiving
Keystone is usually well into its season by late November, which makes it one of the better Thanksgiving ski options in Colorado. Expect holiday dining service at the on mountain restaurants, family programming through Kidtopia, and considerably shorter lines than you will find at Vail or Breckenridge over the same weekend.
December in the village
Santa makes roughly a dozen appearances across December, leading parades, joining diners at brunch and turning up around the village. Pair it with a horse drawn sleigh ride dinner at the Keystone Ranch homestead or fondue at Der Fondue Chessel at the top of the gondola for the kind of evening people plan an entire trip around.
New Year's Eve
Keystone's New Year's Eve is one of the best value celebrations in Summit County. Night skiing and riding runs out of River Run in the late afternoon. Around 7 p.m. the Ski and Ride School skis down Dercum's Dash in formation carrying glow sticks, followed by a fireworks display over Dercum Mountain and River Run Village. Warren Station runs a themed party with live music and DJs until well past midnight, with VIP seating packages available. Because the fireworks go off early in the evening, families can watch the whole thing and still get kids to bed.
Live music, comedy and nightlife at Warren Station
Warren Station Center for the Arts sits in River Run Village and carries the after dark calendar all winter. The winter lineup typically includes:
- Keystone's Winter Bluegrass Weekend: two nights of touring and regional bluegrass acts, usually late January. Friday brings two touring bands, Saturday adds three more regional and national performances, with drink specials running throughout.
- Winter Comedy Series: a run of standup nights in partnership with Comedy Works Denver, with an opener and a headliner each show.
- Canvas Uncorked: a wine and painting party, frequently scheduled alongside Women's Weekend.
- Mardi Gras in the Rockies: New Orleans style parades, live music, beads and family activities in the village. Mardi Gras falls on February 9, 2027.
- Ski film fundraiser screenings: November benefit nights supporting Summit County nonprofits.

Keystone signature winter events
Keystone Women's Weekend
A weekend of on snow clinics for every ability level, first tracks access, apres gatherings and evening events including comedy night and Canvas Uncorked. It is built for women who are brand new to the sport and for people who have been riding for decades, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds.
National Brotherhood of Snowsports Annual Summit
Keystone hosts this week long summit celebrating winter sports, community and inclusion, supporting the organization's mission to widen access to snowsports and back athletes of color competing at the highest level. It brings serious energy to the village for a full week.
Disco tubing at Adventure Point
Keystone's tubing hill sits at the top of the main peak with eight lanes and a lift back to the top, so nobody is hiking. On disco tubing nights the lanes get lights and music. It is worth doing at least once even if you have no kids with you.
Summit County events worth the short drive
Keystone sits within a 30 minute drive of three other ski towns, so your trip does not have to end at the resort boundary.
Breckenridge Ullr Fest, December 17 to 19, 2026
The 63rd annual celebration of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. Viking hats, a wild float parade down Main Street, the Ullr bonfire where the town burns old Christmas trees, the Ullr Ice Plunge into frozen Maggie Pond, the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen, and the unofficial world record attempt at the longest Shotski. Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships, January 23 to February 2, 2027
The 36th annual event brings teams from around the world to hand carve 12 foot tall, 25 ton blocks of snow using nothing but hand tools. No power tools allowed. Sculpting week runs January 23 to 27 and viewing week runs January 27 to February 2, with the finished gallery lit up at night in downtown Breckenridge. Public viewing is free and always has been. Public voting for a favorite sculpture opens during sculpting week.
New Year's Eve fireworks in Breckenridge
Breckenridge launches fireworks from the base of Peak 9 at around 9:30 p.m. on December 31. Because Keystone's show goes off at 7 p.m., you can realistically catch both in one night if you plan the drive. Spring skiing events at Keystone
Keystone usually runs into April, and the closing stretch brings its own calendar: slush bumps, spring apres on the River Run deck, the Kidtopia Music Experience in early March, and closing weekend celebrations once the resort announces the final date. Spring is also the best value window of the season. Nightly rates drop, the sun stays out longer, and the snowpack is still deep on the upper mountain.
Where to stay for Keystone winter events
Which village you book changes how your trip actually feels, because most of the event programming clusters in two spots.
- River Run Village: the center of gravity for events. Kidtopia Headquarters at Expedition Station, Warren Station, the gondola, the village parade route and the fireworks viewing are all right here. Book River Run if events are the point of your trip.
- Lakeside Village: quieter, close to the ice rink and the Keystone Lodge and Spa, and the site of several Kidtopia Spectacular fireworks displays.
- Mountain House Base Area: the locals' base area. Easier parking, faster lift access on busy mornings, and a short shuttle to River Run.
- East Keystone and West Keystone: more space for the money, ideal for larger groups who do not mind a short drive or shuttle.

Frequently asked questions about Keystone winter events
Are Keystone events free?
Most of them are. The entire Kidtopia daily lineup, the village parades, the fireworks, the snow science and wildlife sessions and the ski patrol dog meet and greets cost nothing. You do need a lift ticket, season pass or scenic pass to ride the gondola up to the snow fort. Ticketed events are generally limited to Warren Station concerts and comedy shows and a handful of specialty dining experiences.
What is the best month to visit Keystone for events?
December has the highest concentration, with the Kidtopia Spectacular, Santa appearances, Ullr Fest in Breckenridge and New Year's Eve all packed into a few weeks. Late January is the runner up thanks to Winter Bluegrass Weekend and the snow sculpture championships. March is the value pick: the Kidtopia Music Experience, spring conditions and lower nightly rates.
Do I need to book Keystone event weekends in advance?
Yes. Christmas week, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Presidents Day weekend and spring break fill first and price highest. Snow sculpture viewing week in late January also pulls heavy demand across all of Summit County. Booking three to six months out gets you the best selection. Is Keystone good for families who do not ski?
It is one of the best in Colorado for exactly that. Tubing, ice skating, sleigh rides, dogsledding, the snow fort, the Nordic Center and the full daily Kidtopia schedule mean nobody in your group has to spend the day alone in the condo.
How far is Keystone from Denver?
About 75 miles west on I-70, typically 90 minutes without traffic. Add time on Friday afternoons and Sunday afternoons during ski season, and check CDOT conditions before you drive over the Continental Divide.
