There is a reason Summit County fills up in December. Six mountain towns within a 30-minute radius, four ski resorts on the doorstep, torchlight parades and tree lightings and drone shows, and a free bus connecting all of it.
Here is the full holiday calendar for 2026/2027, plus what is happening at the neighboring resorts and why this is a particularly good year to come.
Why Summit County This Holiday Season
The Calendar Works in Your Favour
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve both fall on a Thursday in 2026. That creates two natural long weekends and makes it far easier to build a trip without burning a full week of leave. It also means the festive evenings land where families can actually attend them.
Four Resorts, One Base
Stay in one place and ski four mountains. Breckenridge and Keystone run on the Epic Pass, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe Basin on the Ikon Pass, and all four sit within about 30 minutes of each other. Whichever pass your group holds, you have options — and A-Basin is barely 20 minutes from Keystone.
The Season Starts Early and Runs Long
Breckenridge's projected opening day is November 7, 2026, which means roughly seven weeks of operations before Christmas and plenty of terrain open by the holidays. The season typically runs into mid or late May, one of the longest in North America. Keystone opens earlier still and runs one of the largest night-skiing operations in Colorado, which matters enormously in December when daylight is short.
Free Transport Solves the Group Problem
The county-wide Summit Stage bus connects Keystone, Dillon, Silverthorne, Frisco, Breckenridge and Copper at no cost. Breckenridge adds its own free Free Ride shuttle and the free BreckConnect Gondola. Nobody needs a car each, and nobody has to be designated driver on New Year's Eve.
Most of the Best Events Are Free
Tree lightings, torchlight parades, drone shows, the Santa race, ice skating on Keystone Lake, sledding at Carter Park. You could fill a full holiday week without paying admission to a single thing.

Late November: The Season Begins
Carnival & The Lighting of River Run
Keystone. Typically late November. Free.
The unofficial start of the holiday season in Summit County. River Run Village lights up with thousands of bulbs, live music plays at Warren Station, and the whole alpine village takes on that particular December glow. Family activities, face painting, photo booths, and hot chocolate, cider and craft cocktails for the grown-ups.
If you can time one arrival around an event, make it this one. It sets the tone for the whole trip.
Thanksgiving Weekend
Thursday, November 26, 2026.
The best-value holiday week of the season. The mountains have been running for weeks, the crowds are a fraction of Christmas, and rates bear no resemblance to late December. You will not have the full mountain yet, but you will have groomers, short lift lines and real snow.
Plan dinner early. Most Summit County restaurants close on Thanksgiving Day, and those that open run limited menus booked weeks ahead. Grocery stores run shortened hours. Shop on arrival day and cook at the house, or book a restaurant holiday service in October rather than November.
Early to Mid December
Race of the Santas & The Lighting of Breckenridge
Breckenridge. Typically the first Saturday of December. Free.
The holiday season kicks off on Main Street with hundreds of runners in full Santa suits, pets in festive costume, and a genuinely joyful atmosphere. Santa then leads a parade down to Blue River Plaza for the lighting of the Town Tree.
It is one of those days that feels lifted from a holiday film, and it costs nothing to watch.
Kidtopia Holiday Spectacular
Keystone. Through December.
Keystone's family programming is the reason a lot of parents choose it over Breckenridge, and December is when it peaks. Ice skating on Keystone Lake, one of the largest Zamboni-maintained outdoor rinks in the country. Snow tubing at Adventure Point at the top of the gondola. Fireworks over the mountain, Santa meet-and-greets, and craft stations across River Run Village and Dercum Mountain.
Holiday Programming Across the Towns
December weekends bring drone shows, reindeer visits, holiday markets and tree lightings across Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne. Watch for artisan markets and craft fairs in the smaller towns, which are where the genuinely local gifts turn up.
Local's tip: the sweet spot for a December trip is December 10 to 20. You get the lights, the markets and the festive atmosphere without holiday-week pricing or crowds.
Christmas Week
Christmas Eve: Thursday, December 24, 2026
Torchlight parades and fireworks. The centrepiece of the Summit County holiday calendar. Skiers carrying torches descend the mountain in a glowing procession, usually followed by fireworks, with cocoa and fire pits at the base. Breckenridge and Keystone both run versions, and the neighboring resorts typically do too.
Expect a full afternoon of base-area festivities beforehand, including Santa photos and family activities. Get outside early — this is the busiest evening of the year and the good viewing spots fill well before the start.
Dinner reservations for Christmas Eve are the hardest table to get all year. Book weeks out, not days. Many groups find the better plan is cooking at the house and walking out for the parade.
Christmas Day: Friday, December 25, 2026
Lifts run, and the morning is one of the quietest of the holiday week because plenty of people are opening presents. If your group wants an uncrowded Christmas morning on snow, that is your window.
Nearly everything else closes. Plan Christmas Day meals at the house and shop before the 25th. Santa and elves are often out on the mountain and around the base areas.
December 26 to 30: Peak Week
The single busiest and most expensive stretch of the entire season. Full terrain, maximum energy, and every restaurant, lesson and activity booked solid.
If you are coming this week, reserve everything in advance: lift tickets, ski school, dinner, tubing times, guided tours. Walk-ins are a genuine gamble.
If your dates are flexible, shifting a week either side saves meaningfully on lodging and lift lines while giving you essentially the same mountain.
New Year
New Year's Eve: Thursday, December 31, 2026
Breckenridge and Keystone both run celebrations, typically with torchlight parades, fireworks and village programming. Several Summit County towns time their fireworks for around 9:00pm specifically so families with young children can take part, which is worth knowing if you have little ones.
Why a rental beats a hotel this week: you get somewhere for the group to gather before and after, a kitchen instead of impossible restaurant reservations, and nobody has to drive. Many groups cook at the house and head out for the fireworks and village celebrations, which are free.
New Year's Day: Friday, January 1, 2027
Traditionally a quiet morning on the mountain. Good snow, thin crowds, and a gentle start for anyone who overdid the night before.
January: The Events Worth Extending For
Ullr Fest
Breckenridge. Typically January. Free to watch.
A multi-day festival honouring Ullr, the Norse god of snow and skiing, and gloriously strange in the best way. The Main Street parade is packed with elaborate floats and costumed revellers, there is a bonfire fuelled by old Christmas trees, and an ice plunge for anyone willing. Live music and talent shows round it out.
International Snow Sculpture Championships
Breckenridge, Riverwalk Center. Typically late January. Free.
Teams from around the world carve 12-foot, 20-ton blocks of hand-packed snow into extraordinary creations, using hand tools only. Watch the carving in progress by day, then return after dark to see the finished pieces lit. They stay up for viewing for several days afterward.
One of the most photographed events on the Colorado winter calendar, and completely free.
The Neighboring Resorts
Summit County's position is its best feature. Four resorts sit within easy reach, and two more are a comfortable drive.
Breckenridge
Five peaks, over 2,900 acres, 187 trails, and the highest chairlift in North America at 12,840 feet. On the Epic Pass. The town itself is the real holiday draw, with a walkable historic Main Street, museums, breweries and the free gondola connecting it to the slopes. Breckenridge rentals.
Keystone
One of Colorado's most family-friendly mountains, also on the Epic Pass, and home to the county's strongest holiday family programming. The night skiing operation is among the largest in the state, which genuinely matters in December. Keystone rentals.
Copper Mountain
On the Ikon Pass, with terrain naturally divided by ability — beginners on one side, experts on the other, everyone meeting in the middle for lunch. That structure is a real advantage for a mixed-ability family group. Copper Mountain rentals.
Arapahoe Basin
About 20 minutes from Keystone and on the Ikon Pass. A-Basin is the county's no-frills, high-alpine option, known for serious terrain, a famously long season and none of the resort-village polish. Worth a day if your group has strong skiers who want something different.
Vail and Beaver Creek
Roughly 45 minutes and an hour west respectively, both on the Epic Pass. Both run substantial holiday programming, and Beaver Creek's daily complimentary cookies at the base have become a genuine tradition worth timing an afternoon around. A good day trip if your group wants to see something beyond Summit County.

Planning Notes
- Book lodging first, and book it early. Christmas week sells out furthest ahead, and large homes go before small ones because there are far fewer of them.
- Buy lift tickets and passes early. Both Epic and Ikon price up as the season approaches.
- Reserve ski school the same day you book lodging. Holiday slots sell out, and lift tickets are usually separate from lessons.
- Make every dinner reservation you care about, especially Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Most Summit County kitchens stop seating around 9:00pm.
- Shop on arrival day. Christmas Day and New Year's Day grocery hours are limited, and a full kitchen meaningfully cuts the cost of a group week.
- Use the free buses. Summit Stage connects all six towns at no cost, and parking at the resorts on peak days is genuinely difficult.
- Colorado enforces a traction law during storms. Book AWD with snow tires, and check COtrip.org or dial 511 before driving up.
- Plan a light first day. Summit County sits high, Breckenridge at around 9,600 feet. Push water hard and go easy that first evening, because altitude plus holiday drinks catches people out every year.
