Boulder Lake
If you're looking for a moderate-to-challenging trail that rewards your effort with a quiet, alpine lake nestled deep in the mountains, the Boulder Lake Trail is a must-do in Summit County.
Less crowded than many of the region's more popular hikes, this out-and-back adventure takes you through dense forest, wildflower-covered meadows, and eventually opens to the stunning Boulder Lake—a peaceful mountain oasis that makes every step worth it.

Trail Overview:

Via Rock Creek Trailhead
About 5.5 Miles round-trip
1,469 ft of elevation gain
Moderate difficulty
dog friendly (on leash)
Getting there:
From Silverthorne, head north on Highway 9, then turn left onto Rock Creek Road (County Road 1350). Follow it for about 1.2 miles and turn left onto the road marked "Rock Creek". Continue for about 1.7 miles to reach the trailhead parking lot. The final portion of the road can be rough—higher clearance vehicles are recommended, especially after rain. There is limited parking at the trailhead, and no restrooms, so plan accordingly.
What to Expect:
The hike begins with a steady climb through classic Colorado lodgepole and aspen forest, gradually gaining elevation as you follow Rock Creek. The path is well-marked but narrow in some spots, with stream crossings and areas that may be muddy or overgrown depending on recent weather. In late June through early August, expect to be surrounded by vibrant wildflowers, including columbine, lupine, and Indian paintbrush.
As you gain altitude, the trail opens up into high-mountain meadows and eventually leads to the serene Boulder Lake—a quiet, reflective spot framed by rugged peaks and shaded by pine. This is your reward: cool breezes, peaceful waters, and maybe even a trout or two rising in the lake if you time it right. If you listen closely, you'll hear the frogs croaking!
Insider Tips:
- Pack bug spray and plenty of water.
- Bring trekking poles if possible for the way down, your knees will thank you.
- Pack a camera or binoculars—this is moose country after all!
- Downloading the trail map before the hike is recommended, as this is in a no-service area.
If you’re looking to trade the crowds for solitude and earn your mountain views with a rewarding climb, Boulder Lake Trail is a must-do during your stay in Summit County.
With its mix of forested paths, vibrant wildflowers, and a peaceful alpine lake as your final destination, this moderate-to-challenging hike offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
Let Boulder Lake become a highlight of your Colorado summer getaway!
