Getting there:
From I-70, take Exit 205 for Silverthorne. Head west on Wildernest Road (becomes Ryan Gulch Road), and follow it until it dead-ends at the Lily Pad Lake Trailhead. Parking is limited, so try to arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends or during peak summer months.
What to Expect:
The hike begins with a short, uphill stretch through shady lodgepole pine forest, offering a gentle workout before leveling out into rolling terrain. Along the way, you’ll pass through open meadows, aspen groves, and wildflower-filled patches (especially vibrant in late June to mid-July).
About halfway in, you’ll reach a small pond, and shortly after, the main Lily Pad Lake—a calm, mirror-like body of water surrounded by marsh grasses and blooming lily pads in summer. It’s a great spot to rest, picnic, or snap some serene mountain photos. Keep your eyes out for birds, chipmunks, and even the occasional moose! The area is teeming with wildlife, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Insider Tips:
- Pack bug spray – mosquitoes can be active near the water in mid-summer.
- Bring water and snacks – there are no facilities at the trailhead.
- Leave no trace – help protect this delicate alpine environment for future hikers.
